Todos hubiéramos querido ser Tommy Tynan.
¿Qué habrías dado por jugar en el equipo de tu vida? Aquel que ves por la televisión o en las gradas del estadio. Pues como si fuera aquella película de Willy Wonka y la fábrica de chocolate, ese ticket de oro que te da la oportunidad de…jugar en el Liverpool.
En 1970, el Liverpool buscaba desesperadamente sangre joven con talento. Después del éxito de mediados de los 60, habían pasado cuatro largos años desde que habían levantado cualquier trofeo y el jefe Bill Shankly estaba reconstruyendo un equipo que dominará Inglaterra y Europa.
El club se unió a Liverpool ECHO para lanzar una competición llamada «Search for a Soccer Star» [Búsqueda de una estrella del fútbol]. El premio ofrecido era un aprendizaje en el Liverpool FC y la oportunidad de convertirse en el ídolo del fútbol inglés.
La respuesta fue asombrosa, ya que 10.000 jóvenes ansiosos rellenaron el cupón y lo devolvieron. Uno de ellos fue Tommy Tynan. El alumno de la ‘St Margaret Mary’s Catholic School’ era un asiduo de The Kop y soñaba con seguir los pasos de Roger Hunt e Ian St John.

Tynan, que creció en una dura zona residencial en Dovecot, luchó por abrirse camino en una serie de pruebas mientras la lista se reducía a 20 aspirantes. En la prueba final en Melwood su equipo ganó 5-3 y delante del gran Bill Shankly y staff técnico, el joven delantero centro de 15 años estaba inspirado, marcando los cinco goles.

Papá había visto a Roger Hunt y a Ian St. John poner a Anfield en pie, así que estaban absolutamente convencidos de que su hijo jugaría en el mismo terreno de juego que esos grandes hombres.»

Tommy siempre recordará aquellos años en Liverpool “Todos entrenaron juntos y yo fui emparejado con Kevin Keegan o John Toshack o Emlyn Hughes. Nunca conocí a nadie que pensara que estaba por encima de ti. Bill Shankly tenía ese aire sobre él. Se paseaba por el pasillo y, de niño, te quitabas de en medio. Qué presencia tenía.
Una vez fui el 13º hombre en un partido y estoy en la charla de equipo, esperando toda esta información técnica y era básicamente Shanks, Ronnie Moran, Bob Paisley y un pequeño tablero con cosas metálicas.
Ellos prepararon el equipo, nombraron a uno o dos jugadores, tiros libres, córneres y eso fue todo, fin de la historia, 10 minutos. Nunca entrenaban la táctica. Tan simple. Coge el balón y pásaselo a uno de tus jugadores. Ellos lo ganaban todo».
Sin embargo, no llegó una llamada al primer equipo y antes de que pudiera reunir el valor para preguntarle a Shankly por qué se retiró el genio escocés «No fue Joe Bloggs quien me mantuvo fuera del primer equipo, fue gente como Kevin Keegan. Algunos de los mejores jugadores del mundo estaban allí en ese momento y el equipo de Liverpool era bastante imparable.»

Tynan pasó los siguientes 16 años aterrorizando a las defensas en las ligas inferiores. Un breve período en Lincoln siguió a su estancia el miércoles, pero fue en el condado de Newport donde realmente se hizo un nombre. Donde coincidió con un tipo que muchos conocéis, John Aldridge.

Casi tres décadas después de ganar esa competición de Liverpool ECHO, ahora es taxista en Plymouth. Donde jugaron los reds en un partido con aquel gol de Lucas Leiva de cabeza.
Pero donde Tommy fue leyenda fue en una ciudad con bastantes vínculos con Liverpool, Plymouth y tal es así que en el Plymouth Argyle hay un grupo de 200 scousers que viajan con el equipo y que se llaman ‘Green Scousers’, ahí Tommy Tynan fue un jugador a tomar en cuenta.
Aquel chico que con 15 años consiguió su sueño y seguro que el de muchos de vosotros, jugar en el Liverpool y poder decir a sus amigos y sus familiares ‘¿Sabes que yo entrené con Bill Shankly?’.
