El mote del Terror de Toxteh le acompañaría siempre, no como un estigma, ni algo malo. Sino como una señal de una persona que no se dejaría amedrentar ante nada, ni ante nadie y sabiendo que, si él vestía esa camiseta Red, era por toda esa gente que estaba apoyándolos de cualquier lugar de Liverpool.
El 20 de Marzo de 1997 a Anfield le esperaba la vuelta del partido de la Recopa ante el equipo noruego del SK Brann, en el partido de ida Robbie había sido el protagonista con un golazo, de los mejores de su carrera, pero en la vuelta volvería a ser protagonista dentro y fuera del campo.
Pongamos en contesto lo acontecido en aquellas fechas y nos vamos a ir unos días antes, la ciudad de Liverpool, puerto marinero europeo, vivía en aquellos años acuciado por los problemas de la falta de trabajo, la eterna lucha y la posibilidad de que tu puesto pendiera de un hilo y tú y tu familia pasarías malos tiempos. Esos días, 500 estibadores de los docks de Liverpool fueron despedidos y los restantes no se iban a cruzar de brazos, la huelga era el camino.
Esta disputa duro desde Septiembre de 1995 – 26 de enero de 1998 (850 días). El conflicto de los estibadores de Liverpool fue un largo enfrentamiento entre los estibadores, sus empleadores Mersey Docks and Harbour Company (MDHC) y Torside Ltd, que duró veintiocho meses entre 1995 y 1998 en Liverpool, Inglaterra.
Las leyes laborales aprobadas por el gobierno conservador de Margaret Thatcher en las décadas de 1980 y 1990, como la Ley de Empleo de 1980, ilegalizaban la participación en acciones secundarias, excepto en circunstancias limitadas. Fowler se reunió con su íntimo amigo Steve McManaman, hijo de uno de los estibadores que estaban en huelga, y ambos acordaron que tenían que aprovechar su posición para dar voz a las reivindicaciones de sus conciudadanos más desfavorecidos. Tenían que hacer alguna cosa para ayudar, así que, además de contribuir con dinero para la caja de resistencia de los trabajadores portuarios, cogieron unas camisetas rojas e hicieron que estamparan en ellas la inscripción “500 Liverpool dockers sacked since September 1995”, o lo que es lo mismo: “500 estibadores de Liverpool despedidos desde septiembre de 1995”.
Steve sugirió que dichas camisetas deberían mostrarse al final del partido, porque sería cuando tendría más alcance su mensaje para el mundo exterior y así no habría sanciones posibles de los estamentos deportivos y en eso quedaron Macca y Robbie.
El plan era sencillo, llevar las camisetas hechas debajo de las de juego, pero como todos sabemos la sangre se calentaba de forma distinta en Fowler. Esa noche en la que John Barnes cumplía su partido 400 con la zamarra del Liverpool, GOD marcaría dos goles, todo el plan iba bajo lo previsto por ambos amigos, pero en el minuto 77 en una jugada con el 2-0 en el marcador, el ‘9’ local recibió una buena asistencia del noruego Stig Inge Bjørnebye y, desde la frontal del área pequeña, anotó su segundo tanto del encuentro con un chut raso y cruzado.
Fowler no pudo esperar más, se levantó su camiseta ante The Kop y los 40,326 espectadores lo vieron, no sólo ellos pudieron ver aquel mensaje “500 Liverpool dockers sacked since September 1995”. Al finalizar el encuentro, él y su compañero McManaman llevaban dichas camisetas.
Hubo a gente que le pareció bien aquella reivindicación y a otros, los poderosos como era lo firmado, les pareció mal. Calvin Klein, por ejemplo, amenazó con emprender acciones legales contra Fowler y contra el club porque la tipografía de la camiseta jugaba con el conocido logo de la marca; el propio Liverpool, que había prohibido a sus jugadores cualquier tipo de reivindicación dentro de los terrenos de juego; y la UEFA, que sancionó al delantero con una multa de 2.000 francos suizos alegando que los estadios de fútbol no eran el sitio más adecuado para mostrar ideologías.
Lo más raro o no, como ya sabemos como se la juega la UEFA, es que semanas después tendrían que poner al bueno de Fowler como un ejemplo de juego limpio, por aquella jugada en la cual le pitaron un penalti ante David Seaman, y Robbie no paró de decir al arbitro que no era tal la infracción pitada. El villano se había convertido en héroe para los mandamases de la UEFA en pocos días.
Fowler dijo años después que estaba orgulloso de aquella estampa “En aquella época estaban perdiendo sus puestos de trabajo y había muchas huelgas. Tenía ganas de mandarles mi ánimo porque creía que no estaban teniendo la cobertura informativa que merecían. Quizá no les ayudé a largo plazo, pero puse sus problemas sobre la mesa cuando nadie hablaba de ellos. Con lo expuestos que estamos mediáticamente, nuestra obligación es echar una mano cuando la gente lo necesita”.
Algunas camisetas, que costaban £5 cada una, se vendieron en conciertos por ejemplo y en total alcanzaron unas ventas de casi 50.000 y que ayudaron al fondo de ayuda familiar.
Steve McManaman ya sabia como era su amigo, pero sabia algo más, él y Fowler se debían a la gente de Liverpool. Ese 20 de marzo del 1997 no les podía dejar caminar solos, como dice nuestro himno.
